Verbatim Card Reader Causes a Kernel Panic
I bought a Verbatim ExpressCard 3/4 CF Card Reader the other day to use for transferring pictures from my camera. This card reader is good and fast, but I was getting a Kernel Panic on my MacBook Pro when I ejected it. I Googled around a bit and ran across a number of people having this same issue. Well, I managed to resolve it and thought I’d share the solution here.
It turns out that it was all user error. (oops!) Dismounting the volume from your desktop does not power off the card reader. If you physically eject the card reader without first powering it off, it can cause a kernel panic. Here’s the proper procedure:
First, dismount the volume from your desktop by dragging it to the trash. Then go to the ExpressCard icon in the right side of the menu bar and choose ‘Power off Card’. Now you may safely eject the card from the ExpressCard slot without causing a kernel panic.

Puddy Tat Got a Bath!
Puddy Tat has been rubbing himself up against something greasy outside. I think it’s my neighbor’s construction equipment (hate that guy!) ’cause it smells like that old fuzzy farm grease. So, for the second time this week, Puddy got a bath. He didn’t like it much, but he lived, and now he’s all soft and fluffy again. Smells good, too. He forgives me.
One week down on the kids being gone! It feels like it’s been a month! Wow! So far, I’ve kept myself busy doing some new photography, but I’m running out of things to do! Have a look at the new portrait and kids ‘n water galleries - the new pictures are in there. Of course, there’s always the broken stuff around the house. Maybe I’ll get to that this week. Puddy misses them too - Suddenly, I’m his new best friend!
I’ve gotten into the very bad habit of staying up late, (like 3am!) but I’ve been forcing myself to get up to the alarm, just so I don’t feel like a slug all day. I’m a natural insomniac. Oh well, it’s the end of summer, the kids will be back soon enough, and then it’s back to school time! I love summers, but it is kinda nice that they end so life can get back to a normal schedule!

It’s the third week of school and I’m already behind in my study work. partially because my mother was in town last week. I never thought that my Mom could wear me out, but it seems that the older she gets, the more her energy level goes up! Also partially because I haven’t had the mental energy to dedicate myself to the classes yet. It’s becoming painfully obvious that I have to set aside dedicated time to do study work. I imagine this will get easier to do once the kids are back in school and doing homework themselves.
My Mom took the kids back home with her for a couple weeks. It’s a welcome break for me, (all the housework is caught up!) but I miss them already! I spoke with them on the phone today and they’re having so much fun playing with their cousins that they aren’t missing me in the least! That’s OK - it’s good for them to get a little vacation. They’re planning to go camping - it’ll be a first for them, and I’m going to miss out on it. I grew up camping in the Minnesota woods, and I can say there’s nothing quite like it around here.

We met some new friends the other week, and went out to photograph our kids. Our four (combined) kids hit it off great, and I think this will grow into a valued friendship.
You can see more photos from our recent session in the Kids ‘n Water Gallery and the Portrait Gallery.
I’m already looking forward to the next photo session - we’re planning it now, and instead of chasing four kids around, it will be just one of the kids. It’ll be a good opportunity for me to focus on the photography again and try to find that style that I’ve been looking for. Now I just need a new camera!
Their Mom and I can talk each-other’s ear off for hours, and their Dad happens to write software and specializes in Usability. After talking with him for some time, I’ve come to realize that to become a Usability Specialist, I’ll probably have to add classes at a different college for a Minor in Psychology, Heuristics and Human Factors, at the least, I’m sure! I’m sure we’ll have many things to talk about in the future!
